Heritage, folklore and film
Get to Know Us
Hälsingland’s cultural landscape includes the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland, seven farmhouses recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage property. The region is also home to the Hårga legend, which helped inspire the fictional world of Midsommar. Ari Aster researched Hälsingland’s farmhouses and folklore for the film, although the production was shot elsewhere.
Parts of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo were filmed in Segersta. The region’s screen history also includes local productions and projects made by filmmakers based here.

Local production support
When you want it
I’m Johan Bodell, a filmmaker and producer based in Hälsingland. I can be a first point of contact for productions exploring locations, local contacts and practical support in the region.
Depending on what your production needs, I can help with location research and scouting, introductions to local people and organisations, and coordination on the ground. You are also welcome to explore the region and contact local companies directly—there is no requirement to work through me.
Planning a shoot
Every location and production is different. Start a conversation about your dates, visual references, crew size and practical needs. I can help you understand what to investigate next, including location access, permissions, local services, accommodation and transport.
Funding and regional support
There is currently no dedicated regional production fund or location-based incentive for feature films and television series in Hälsingland and Gävleborg.
We believe a stronger regional support structure could help productions choose Hälsingland and create lasting opportunities for the local film community. Together with filmmakers, municipalities and cultural partners, we are working to build support for the future.
Other film-related grants may be available through Region Gävleborg, but they have specific criteria and are not general production funding for every project. Please check the region’s current guidelines for details.
